Getting Filmed! And learning how to talk about murals…

First of all, yikes! Sorry about the long absence from the blog-world. Many things a-happening: working on my own fine art, starting a new job, house-hunting, checking out trail-mural possibilities for the summer… BUT, I am going to be better about updating this blog…. starting NOW.
I thought I’d start back up by talking about a recent experience of being filmed by students from Silver Spring’s Docs in Progress. They covered my work at the Electric Maid. Getting filmed was an eye-opening process for me. I frankly had no idea what went into filmmaking. Seeing all the lighting, tripods and complicated-looking equipment Sarah and Deka lugged into the Electric Maid the day of filming was impressive to say the least. And this is just one tiny step in the whole process: there’s editing, sound, … and a whole bunch of other creative and technical aspects that I can’t begin to fathom.
I was nervous about being filmed, and acting self-conscious and generally dorky. But I surprised myself by actually enjoying the recorded interview. At first a little awkward – darting my eyes to the camera even though I was told not to and worrying about how I sounded - eventually I settled into it. I loved explaining all about my mural love. Its not something I delve into often in actual conversation, and it became a lively engagement. The experience reminded me that its good to take stock of my own personal mission, beliefs and inspirations, to be able to talk about them easily and passionately. So often the every day tasks can muddle the overall mission. Painting murals every day is a wonderful thing, but its good for me to remember why I decided to go down this mural painting road in the first place. It provides fodder for inspiration, and the ability to reach out to others easily about a topic that is important to me.
